Bring In Gold Star Reviews These Olympics

Written by

When the ancient Greeks created the Olympics in 776 B.C., they probably didn’t think of how much the Games would benefit businesses in the years to follow. As economists and scholars bicker amongst themselves about the economic boosts that these games bring to the host countries, restaurants can take advantage of the magnitude of these Olympics. The Olympic schedule lends itself for restaurants to make a huge profit during traditionally slow hours.

Starting from the opening ceremony on August 5th, there are plenty of Olympic-themed options within the next two weeks to get and keep, customers in the door. Until the Olympics end on the 21st, the opportunities to capitalize on them are great. Check out these tidbits from BlueCart and the only thing that's faster than Usain Bolt, is ordering with BlueCart!

The ultimate goal is to get customers into the door, but often times consumers are more comfortable watching sports on their couch rather than a barstool. For those homebodies that never want to leave the house, offering catering allows you to reach their stomachs in a unique way. Did you know that catering sales in 2015 jumped up 5.1% from 2014? Another stat, restaurant catering sales accounts for 38% of the catering market (according to Technomic). The fact that the industry is moving to catering isn’t a shock- more and more restaurants are focusing on convenience and with such a time as the Olympics, it’s an easy way to start off your catering journey.

Decorate with the Red, White, and Blue

If faced with two restaurants to have dinner and drink at while watching the Olympics, chances are a customer would want to be in the company of other proud Americans. Decorating with red, white, and blue shows your restaurant has pride, and that customers will be able to watch an event or two, rather than chancing that something else would be on the TVs.

Trivia Night: Olympic Edition

Who has won the most gold medals in Cameroon history? Don’t know? Neither do we, but that’s not the point. Trivia nights are a staple in restaurants, especially during the mid-week crawl that most restaurants go through. There are a ton of sites that highlight obvious and obscure Olympic facts, write down some of your favorites and test the knowledge of your customers (Did you know that the triathlon was first introduced at the 2000 Olympics games in Sydney?) Offer the winner, or winners, a special prize or discount on a future meal. Or you could go all out and give out gold medals with your brand logo on it. Either way, it’ll be a fun way to get people in the door.

Just remember to keep your eye out for cheaters.

Country and/or event themed drinks

If holidays create an excuse to have themed parties and drinks, then the Olympics are a 16 day holiday. To get people to celebrate even more, show their country pride, or simply try a new type of drink, a list of themed drinks will go a long way. The larger teams could include USA, Germany, the UK, France, Russia, China and of course the host nation of Brazil. Some other good drink and country matches include Spain, Mexico, Italy, Canada, Australia and Japan. All these countries sent the most athletes in the 2012 London summer Olympics, so odds are they will be well received and recognized. Some ideas to get you started: American-made bourbon, German beer, a Brazilian caipirinha, a Pimm’s cup, or a Mexican-inspired margarita.

Specials/discounts when the USA wins certain medals

Getting a medal for the United States of America is great in itself, but gets even better by celebrating with a discount off your favorite beer. Offering a special price for say, appetizers or a distinct United States Pilsner, if the US wins an event will get people to take a seat and watch. Having confidence in their team and country combines with the always-appreciated event of getting a better deal on food and drinks. It’s just the American way!

Using some of these ideas, you can get some gold medal-worthy reviews.
