Internship Spotlight: Dylan Schafe

It's an exciting time to be a part of the BlueCart team. We've spent the better part of the last 6 months growing our family from 30 members to 45. In the two and a half years BlueCart has been serving the hospitality industry, an explosive 50% increase in such a short amount of time is certainly something to celebrate.

To compensate for our rapid growth, we've opened up several new positions with the purpose of finding the perfect people to join our family. One of these people is Dylan Schafe who came aboard our San Francisco location in December of 2016.

In order to provide new applicants and future Carters with a first-hand perspective of what it's like to soar through our internship program with flying colors, we sat down with Dylan to talk about how his internship blossomed into a full-time position as an Account Executive.

Here's what Dylan had to say

What was your background coming into the internship?

I was a recent graduate with no formal experience other than public speaking and working with people through college.

What made you want to take the risk?

I had offers for other full time positions when I joined BlueCart as an intern, but it really came down to what product I wanted to represent. As a current full-time Account Executive, I feel that being able to represent a product that I truly believe in was well worth the risk of taking the internship.

What was the training like? Who did you train with? What did you learn?

The training was flexible. I was given the opportunity to make decisions on my own, which allowed me to develop myself as a professional in the ways I saw fit. I primarily trained with an experienced Account Exec, but worked closely with the rest of the SF team. The early training was very experiential--lots of shadowing to start, then jumping right in. I was able to shadow various people and then make it my own--which is how I developed a majority of the sales pitch that I use today, as well as the self-confidence necessary for a career in sales.

What was your Impact Proposal? How did you come up with it? How did it turn out?

My Impact Proposal was to focus on the growth of the SF office. Before my cohort started, they only had one full-time Account Exec, so our outreach was fairly slow. I decided to make my impact one of performance--by endeavoring to demo BlueCart to at least one supplier every day. Before I started, we were giving a ton of attention to our restaurant clients, so I wanted to help shift the focus over to suppliers. On average we went from one supplier demo a week to a demo every day.

Others chose more creative routes (such as developing the Zero Waste Kitchen component, or working with school cafeterias to improve performance and decrease waste) but I wanted to create a proposal that demonstrated consistency. In the end, it paid off--after reaching those metrics, I was offered a position as a full time account executive.

You’re at BlueCart still, and were transitioned to an Account Exec role now. What are you doing? And how does it tie into the work you did with the internship?

As an intern I worked in sales with various clients in order to learn the ropes. As an Account Executive, I now work with clients of a much larger scale, focusing on tier one and tier 2 suppliers in the bay area.
